Every year we look to special projects and requests that support families and care givers that support local Neonatal Intensive Care Units. There are so many wonderful volunteers that on a daily basis care for both babies and their families. They are there to celebrate as the young ones graduate from the unit to finally be reunited with their families and they also mourn with and care for those who are grieving after the loss of a child.
This month we had one of our members share a story that moved us all and shared a desire to create Angel Wraps, small beautifully crocheted and knitted wrap that is created to comfort those who experience an infant loss, at any stage of pregnancy. They also provide as a burial cloth if the infant is to be buried. Each comes with a small heart that can be removed as a keepsake and prayer cloth.
When we shared this with our local NICU, Catawba Valley Hospital, they loved them and were excited to be able to receive some. They also requested another item, so we will have wo projects to choose.
The second project are cute preemie graduation caps. These caps are used during the celebration of a child being released from the NICU to finally rejoin their family at home.
It is a big deal for both the families and the caregivers.
If you would like to try a new project and donate one of these items, we have supplied patterns and some workshop opportunities to learn how to make them. If you are able to come ot one of our Stitching with TwinKnits workshops we will also supply any materials you will need to complete either one of these projects. We will be working on these during the month of May, but will be happy to collect them whenever you are moved to make one. If you are not local to our area, please contact us if you want to send them or reach out to your local hospital to inquire if they might need them.
